A will is a document that tells a person's family or heirs and the courts how to distribute his or her money and property. A will is a basic estate planning tool, and a current and valid will is the best way to make sure your property is distributed according to your wishes and your family is taken care of after you're gone. Anything titled in your individual name will be distributed at the time of your passing, according to your Will. If you do not have a valid Will, the Court will step in and distribute these assets according to the current Probate statutes. Many people also use trusts in conjunction with their will, as an independent estate planning tool, or both. Whether you want to prepare your first will or you are interested in updating your estate plan or exploring trusts, an estate planning lawyer can help you tailor a plan to fit your specific needs.

Many people are consider their Living Will and their Medical Surrogate Designation forms to be an integral part of the process of preparing their Will. These documents appoint someone to speak for you when you cannot speak for yourself about your medical condition and your living will gives that person and your Doctors YOUR specific instructions as to the types of care you wish to receive and the types you do not wish to receive.  The only way to insure that your Doctor and relatives honor your wishes as to your medical care are to properly explain your preferences in these documents.
